The drowning victim has been identified as Daniel Sosa-Zerebecka of St. Catharines.

Police recovered the body from the shoreline of Lake Erie, an estimated 13 kilometres east of the park, at about noon on Monday, OPP Acting Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said in a video posted to social media.

It was about 2 p.m. Saturday when two people swimming in the lake in the beach town appeared to be in distress, police said, and two people who jumped into help them also struggled.

A bystander on the beach threw a lifesaving ring to the swimmers, managing to save three of the four people, Sanchuk said, adding the fourth person “slipped under the water.”

“We want to thank everyone who put their lives in jeopardy to assist the individuals who were in the water,” he said, adding to the person who threw in the lifeline: “Thank you from the OPP, you definitely were able to save three lives that day.”

A post-mortem exam is scheduled for Tuesday, Sanchuk said.

Choppy water made the search difficult at times for rescue boats. Searchers were using all-terrain vehicles on the shore.
