LFT has been busy behind the scenes with plans of bringing the show outdoors in Port Dover now that the province has moved into Stage 3 of its reopening plan.

“We were able to utilize the year for a couple of things. We went into heavy development,” Derek Ritschel, artistic director at the Lighthouse Festival Theatre, said in an interview.

Outdoor productions will be held this summer under a large tent located at the Links at Port Dover Golf Course.

The tent will house 54 guests with one single entrance and a designated exit. All guests will have to wear a mask when arriving at or leaving their seat. However, guests can purchase a drink at the bar and remove their masks when seated.

“At this time, it’s not all about ticket sales, it’s about creating an environment that’s safe and comfortable, we need that now,” said Ritschel.

The theatre will feature Chase the Ace and Beyond the Sea as the two summer productions.

Productions will be one-act plays, with no intermissions or other breaks as part of COVID-19 safety protocols.

The theatre has been impacted financially from its inactivity throughout the course of the pandemic. However, Ritschel remains hopeful that the audience will respond and attend when the doors reopen.

“There may be the odd joke here and there that’s influenced by COVID, but the vast majority of writers did not find it inspirational for the genre of comedy and adventure or musicals,” said Ritschel.

“So, when people do return to the theatre, they can turn COVID off for a couple of hours and have a good laugh.”

Chase the Ace will premiere on July 23 and run till August 8. Beyond the Sea will run from August 24 to September 12.
